Where is hartland




















Close to Stoke is the local beach at Welcombe Mouth. At low tide there is sand and lots of rock pools. The beach is worth visiting just to see the stream and waterfalls tumbling down to the sea here.

There are some wonderful walks along the coast from here and there is parking above the beach. Not far away is Docton Mill, of Saxon origins and with its beautiful gardens. There is also the unique fishing village of Clovelly with its steep cobbled streets down to the harbour. In fact, Hartland is within easy reach of some of the most attractive locations in North Devon.

Four miles distant is the unspoilt fishing village of Clovelly, where no automobiles are allowed to travel. For centuries the townsfolk of Hartland had to walk to nearby Stoke to worship. The church in Stoke is dedicated to St Nectan, a 6th-century missionary from Wales who was murdered here. In the early Victorian period, a new church was built in Hartland, on the site of the 17th-century town hall.

The only remnant of the hall is the 17h century clock. A short distance outside the town is Hartland Quay, with a Shipwreck Museum reminding visitors that this was one of the most treacherous places in Britain for ships. The monastery was founded for the Augustinian order in and was dissolved in , making it the very last monastery to be dissolved by Henry's commissioners. Another fascinating heritage site is Docton Mill, founded in the Saxon period and now boasting one of the finest gardens in the West Country.
