An important lesson to learn for all Trekkies - You can trust a beard, but never trust a Goatee I think that's the th rule of acquisition. Zibbobz - T. Riker is of course observing Rule 52; "Never ask when you can take Also, O'Brien was transporter chief on the Enterprise, and Thomas has a problem with transporters.
If I remember correctly he may have been operating the transporter when Thomas was brought aboard. TysonoftheNorthwest - When he was brought aboard the Enterprise, yes, but he was on the Rutledge when the accident occurred.
According to both Memory Alpha and the transcript , the exchange between O'Brien and Riker takes place on the bridge of the Defiant. Show 3 more comments. This always bothered me too, but this is definitely the most logical explanation. Valorum k gold badges silver badges bronze badges. Are you answering the question, or just thanking other people for their answers? Adamant - Probably the latter but once you remove the chatter, there's an answer in there. Valorum - Yes, I think so.
Adamant - The point about O'Brien being just as puzzled and presumably then working it out is a good one. Sorry guys I was commenting on previous post plus outing my own spin on it. Although it's theoretically possible that he swapped ships temporarily, there's zero reason to assume that that's what happened.

Thus he doesn't share any personality traits with Will neccasarily, and also thus, any intereactions he has with characters have to be taken in their own light, without worrying about "but will woudln't do that".

I think he panics when he meets O'brien, because he knows this is a guy who unlike Dax knows Will Riker personally and is therefore far more likely to be able to blow Tom's cover. Tom has obviously got a timeline in place by which he wants to steal away Defiant, and he can't afford to waste any more time trying to keep up the pretence for O'brien.
