Most bites are relatively harmless, leaving just an itchy patch of skin behind. But some bites can carry disease. Deer ticks, for example, typically carry Lyme disease. Insects will sting humans only to defend against a perceived threat. When injected into your skin, the venom causes most of the itching and pain associated with the sting.
It can also cause an allergic reaction. Scorpions have a reputation for stinging. Many species have barbed tails equipped with poison, some strong enough to kill a human.
The venom injected into your body from the bite or sting of an insect will cause your immune system to respond. This can cause the throat to tighten and make breathing difficult or cause low blood pressure. Anyone can be bitten or stung by an insect, and bites and stings are very common.
If you feel ill or experience flu-like symptoms in the days following an insect bite, see your doctor for tests to rule out infections or diseases you may have contracted from the insect. Its identity may help your doctor properly diagnose your symptoms.
Be grateful for any advice , thank you. I am so sorry you are getting bitten. Incredibly difficult to pinpoint what it could be, some if these insects are really small, they could be flying insects or ones lurking in clothes. I was playing in the grass with my nephews about 3 months ago and when I got home I saw I had a bite red mark, circle on my lower leg. The park is right on the water of the intercostal in florida grassy with small ponds.
I noticed in the passing weeks after it appeared that a cluster of 3 began to show up. They now resemble small creators. I have a few on my other leg as well but smaller.
Do I have a parasite or what? Please help…. I was bitten last night it sounded like mosquito switched the light on it was my head board looked thin black long body I managed to kill it,have a large lump on my neck which is itchy, I had the same thing a couple of weeks ago on my hip 2 large lumps,am hoping I have killed the only one,no sign in day light.

Sorry to be that person, but the first photo on this page is a fly in the family Syrphidae, which does not contain any fly that stings or bites. Thank you for this. Thank you for being that person, Tin! Stuff like this fuels ignorance and makes people unnecessarily afraid of our precious invertebrates.
A responsible pet owner who uses flea treatments. My professional pest control people say that flea eggs can survive on a treated pet, drop off onto clothing or onto carpets and survive for months as egg and then cocoon before hatching. I spent thousands of pounds over three years getting rid, but then getting reinvested. Not everyone displays an allergic reaction to flea bites. I used Indorex spray. Keep windows open. Collect all bedding and clothing and put it in black bin bags, to transport to your washing machine.
Take your duvets, pillows and cushions pads and covers to the launderette or dry cleaners for laundering NOT dry cleaning. Wash all bedding and clothing at 90 degrees. Use the narrow nozzle to get into every nook and cranny: where carpets and rugs meet the skirting boards, vacuum seat and back cushions on sofas, plus the nooks and crannies of the sofa itself.
Rugs — vacuum the undersides too. Move furniture and…vacuum! Beds — do mattresses and divan bases. Do hard floors as well as carpets and rugs. Dust bag needs to go into a plastic bag before you move it to the outside bin i. Spray, spray, spray. Everywhere you vacuumed needs to be sprayed. I have a large three bedroom, two bathroom flat, and I used seven cans of Indorex spray.
On your mattresses — look for the little ventilation holes on the sides and spray in there too. Spray where skirting boards meet flooring even hard floors. Scarper for a few hours to let the worst of the spray settle. It is unpleasant and not good for you.
But I keep finding bites that usually come in one single bite mostly on my arms and back sometimes my stomach. And they itch but not too bad. My husband woke this morning and his right ear lobe is so swollen almost the size of a large grape.
He does not have large lobes. On inspection there is a tiny bite close to his head on his ear and when pressed is very hard and painful. Any suggestions. Hello, I wondered if you could help me. I am getting bitten at night whether I am in my bed or on the sofa downstairs. My partner get non whatsoever. The bites themselves are tiny little red bumps that itch so intensely that they get scratched off and become raw open sores that still itch continuously.
They sometimes appear in small clusters, sometimes they appear to be in a line. Most commonly they are on my ankles and lower legs, second most common place is on the inside of my forearms, but they do appear on my stomach, chest, back, etc. Never do I seem to find them in hot sweaty places like my groin or armpits.
Kind regards, Andrew. Andrew See my other reply about fleas. Your bites sound just like mine. Incredible dormancy period for fleas — six months is common, up to 12 months can happen. Your cat could be treated and have fleas or eggs from an infested cat or dog, or dropped ones in the grass, get on-board. I was also advised to sprinkle a really light dusting of diatomaceous earth onto flower beds too. Several bites in a line sound like bedbugs. They are hard to find because they can hide in tiny cracks or joints in the furniture rather than the bedding.
Usually there are small signs of their presence tiny black excretions. Its a sharp pain and it makes my arm flex whenever it throbs harder. What could it be? The picture of the tick with the tweezers is very misleading. Even though it is explained underneath how to remove them the picture shows the tweezers holding on to the body. Also removing a tick in this way could leave mouth parts in the bite causing infection. I found an itchy bite mark on me one morning on my upper thigh.
This was weird because I always wear pants at work. I itched it a lot thinking maybe it was just a mosquito bite because I usually get big bumps when I am bit. By the next morning there was a large red hive mark around the now darker red spot in the middle. The red spot in the middle developed a white dot in the middle of that. It was warm to the touch and was painful like a sunburn. I never found a tick or a stinger. My doctor put me on an oral steroid and that brought down the inflammation and it is getting better.
Could it have been a spider? Could the stinger of something come off with friction? I live in a woodland area and not far from a farm. Last night I was bitten whilst outside. Although it itches I have not been tempted to scratch, but today my leg is swollen and I now have a big blister at the site of the bite and it also burns.
What could this be? I have been in my garden in the UK in shorts. I found group of slightly raised red marks in a group. Ticks should be removed with a proper tick removing tool.
You risk leaving the head parts in your skin which can then get infected 2. Always remove from the head. What has been hitting me? Less then a month ago I received 2 bites one in each leg that I just woke up to that itched like a mosqueto bite. As the day went on blisters began to form and then started to wheep! Swelling redness and pain followed went to the doctor was our on antibiotics. Now 2 days ago I received what I thought was just a normal couple of misqueeto bites on my left calf.
They itched as normal the first day second day itchieness got worse and bite seemed bigger. All skin around this bite seemed like it felt hot and bumpy!
Next day woke up to a large blister, put itch cream on it and covered! I do have demodex around my eyelids and have not been very successful in getting rid of them, HOWEVER, this comment is about something else.
Usually they hit on my cheek below the eye. None of my doctors know a thing about such. Any ideas or help? It pains, itches, and it shows no point of any entry like these photos! I have a potted plant next to me, if that is any clue.
I am lost. Any ideas would be appreciated. Could not put pressure on leg to walk. Your email address will not be published. I accept the Privacy Policy. Julia Boam on August 17, at am. Emma Hammett on September 25, at am. Unfortunately, experience shows us that almost all bug bites look strikingly similar. Mild itchiness and pain are normal reactions to insect bites and stings, but if you experience anything more severe than these, including shortness of breath and swelling away from the original site, you should contact a doctor or seek medical attention immediately. Ready to get to the bottom of your bite? Here are pictures of the most common bug bites to keep on your radar.
What they look like: The best way to ID a tick bite is to find one of the insects attached to you—and they can linger for three to six days as they feed on your blood. Some leave a red spot about the size of a dime , but not everyone exhibits this. Tick bites often occur on warmer parts of the body, like the hairline, armpits, behind the knees, and groin.
Symptoms to note: Tick bites are pretty painless and a bit itchy at first, but dangerous, with more serious symptoms appearing days to weeks after a bite. Related: How to Remove a Tick Correctly. Redness and swelling at the site of the bite are also common. Thankfully, most spiders bite only when provoked. Symptoms to note: Innocuous spider bites often cause mild pain like a bee sting and even itching. But watch out for brown recluses and black widows: The former can cause necrotic lesions, while the latter can bring on muscle spasms, tremors, and nausea.
Seek medical help if you suspect a bite from either of these spiders. Related: How to Treat a Spider Bite. What it looks like: Mosquito bites present as small, puffy, round bumps that are lighter or redder than the surrounding skin. Symptoms to note: As you most likely know, mosquito bites are painless at first, then very, very itchy. The disease can spread from wild rodents to pets and people.
Over the past 10 years, as few as 1 and as many as 17 cases of plague were reported in the United States, according to the CDC , most in the rural West. Symptoms of plague include swollen lymph nodes, headache, fever, and chills that appear from one to six days after the bite.
Beestings cause a sharp pain that may continue for a few minutes, then fade to a dull, aching feeling. The area may still feel sore to the touch a few days later. A red skin bump with white around it may appear around the site of the sting, and the area may itch and feel hot to the touch.
If you've been stung by a bee before, your body may also have an immune response to the venom in the sting, resulting in swelling where the sting occurred or in an entire area of your body, including your throat and lungs. If you have this type of allergic response, called anaphylaxis , it is a medical emergency that needs treatment immediately.
Symptoms of a severe allergy to a beesting include hives, swelling, trouble breathing, dizziness, cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and even cardiac arrest. Lice bites are tiny red spots on the shoulders, neck, and scalp from small parasitic insects that can live on your clothes or in your bedding. Some people may develop a larger, uncomfortable skin rash from lice bites.
Continual scratching of the itchy spots could lead to an infection, marked by symptoms including swollen lymph nodes and tender, red skin. An infected lice bite may also ooze and crust over; it will need to be treated by a doctor, but lice are not known to carry other diseases.
Ant bites and stings are typically painful and cause red skin bumps. Some types of ants, like fire ants, are venomous, and their bites can cause a severe allergic reaction.
Fire ants bite first to hold on and then sting, giving a sharp pain and a burning sensation. If you're bitten by fire ants , you may see white, fluid-filled pustules or blisters pictured a day or two after the sting. These last three to eight days and may cause scars. The bumps may also be itchy and red, and you may have swelling around the site. It's important not to scratch or break open the blisters because they can become infected, notes the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.
Carpenter ant bites are also painful because they spray formic acid into the bite, which causes a burning feeling. Mites do not usually spread disease, but their bites can irritate the skin and cause intense itching. Itch mites usually feed on insects but will bite other animals, including people.
The bites usually go unnoticed until itchy, red marks develop that may look like a skin rash. Chiggers are a form of mite that inject their saliva so that they can liquefy and eat skin.
In response to a chigger bite , the skin around the bite hardens. The surrounding skin becomes irritated and inflamed pictured , and an itchy red welt develops.
Mites also cause the condition called scabies , which is contagious from person to person, notes the CDC. Female scabies mites burrow into the skin to lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the larvae come to the skin's surface. They begin to molt and then burrow back into the skin to feed. This results in a skin rash that may look like acne pimples and create intense itching that gets worse at night.
You may also notice light, thin lines on the skin where the mites have burrowed, including between the fingers, in the bends at the wrists and knees, and under jewelry on the wrists and fingers. Kissing bugs, also known as assassin bugs, can pass on the parasites that cause Chagas disease.
According to research from the University of Texas at El Paso published in October in the journal Acta Tropica , more than half of these insects carry the parasite. Kissing bugs hide in the daytime but emerge at night, often leaving bites on the face and causing a swollen eyelid.
